What organelles are involved in cellular respiration?

Posted November 6, 2023

Answer

The main organelle involved in cellular respiration is the mitochondria. The mitochondria is also known as the powerhouse of the cell as its specialized membrane is able to produce 32 ATP molecules during cellular respiration. Pyruvate oxidation and the Krebs cycle both occur in the mitochondrial matrix. ATP synthesis and oxidative phosphorylation occur within the inner mitochondrial membrane. It is important to note that the mitochondria is only involved in the process of aerobic respiration; anaerobic respiration occurs in the cytoplasm since anaerobic cells do not have specialized organelles.
