A good genetic marker should have these qualities:
- Be selectively neutral
- Be highly reproducible
- Be largely polymorphic in nature
- Should show codominant inheritance pattern
- Occur frequently within the genome
- Should not interact with other markers when using multiple markers simultaneously
- Should be easy to detect using an easy-to-use, rapid assay
