Why is chromatin structure important?

Chromatin structure is important for several different processes such as providing genome stability, gene expression, genome replication, and DNA repair and recombination. The wrapping of DNA around histones to form a chromatin structure has two primary purposes. One purpose is for the condensation of the large DNA to occur so that it can fit into the nucleus properly. This prevents the DNA from being tangled. The second purpose is to also prevent the DNA from being transcribed continuously. Chromatin structure has an important role in gene expression where chromatin must first be unwrapped. This unwrapping process is known as chromatin remodeling.
