Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 18 is a 56 kDa protein that can be found in the nucleolus, cytoplasm and microtubule organizing center of cells. It is sometimes referred to as cell proliferation-inducing gene 46 protein, Keratin-18 or Cytokeratin-18. In Homo sapiens, keratin, type I cytoskeletal 18 recognizes scaffold protein, cadherin involved in cell-cell adhesion and RNA. It is an integral part of organismal processes, for example, intermediate filament cytoskeleton organization, anatomical structure morphogenesis and Golgi to plasma membrane CFTR protein transport. It is the subject of intensive study stemming from the fact that it is a member of the extrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway and tumor necrosis factor-mediated signaling pathway. Sequencing of Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 18 has shown evidence that it contains a primary structural unit, the IF rod domain. It has been closely linked to essential functions like structural molecule activity. Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 18 is a negative regulator of apoptotic process. Mutations and abnormalities in Keratin, type I cytoskeletal 18 have been associated with a number of diseases, for example, Cirrhosis (CIRRH).
