Interferon γ (IFN-gamma) is a 19 kDa protein that can be expressed in the extracellular region and extracellular space of cells. IFN-γ binds to interferon-γ receptor. It is a promoter of phagocytosis, gene expression and nitrogen compound metabolic process conversely also acts to negatively regulate gene expression, DNA-templated transcription, and smooth muscle cell proliferation. IFN-gamma aids in organismal processes, namely, humoral immune response, macrophage activation involved in immune response and macrophage differentiation. It has been closely linked to vital functions like cytokine activity. Mutations and abnormalities in IFN-γ have been thought to be involved with a number of diseases, namely, aplastic anemia (AA).
