Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 1C is a 32 kDa protein that can be expressed in the cytoplasm and nucleus of cells. It is sometimes called Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor p57 and p57Kip2. In humans, p57Kip2 is thought to be essential to organismal processes, for example, cell cycle arrest. p57Kip2 recognizes protein-containing complex. p57Kip2 is the subject of extensive study because of the fact that it acts in the positive regulation of transforming growth factor β receptor signaling pathway, and also, has been associated with critical functions such as cyclin-dependent protein serine/threonine kinase inhibitor and protein kinase inhibitor activity. p57Kip2 binds with protein-containing complex. Mutations and abnormalities in p57Kip2 have been thought to be involved with a number of diseases, for instance, Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) and Intrauterine growth retardation, metaphyseal dysplasia, adrenal hypoplasia congenita, and genital anomalies (IMAGE). Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome, an autosomal dominant inheritancedisorder characterized by proptosis, midface retrusion and accelerated skeletal maturation, has in particular been of interest to scientists.
