Cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A is a 17 kda protein that can be located in the nucleus and cytosol of cells. It is alternatively called Cyclin-dependent kinase 4 inhibitor A, Multiple tumor suppressor 1 and p16-INK4a. In humans, p16-INK4a has been associated with vital functions like cyclin-dependent protein serine/threonine kinase inhibitor activity. p16-INK4a is a promoter of macrophage apoptotic process, cellular senescence and smooth muscle cell apoptotic process while also is a suppressor of cell population proliferation, cell growth and NF-kappaB transcription factor activity. p16-INK4a is an integral part of organismal processes, for instance, ras protein signal transduction, G1/S transition of mitotic cell cycle and replicative senescence. p16-INK4a recognizes RNA, protein kinase and NF-kappaB. Mutations and abnormalities in p16-INK4a have been closely linked to a number of diseases, in particular, cutaneous malignant melanoma 2 (CMM2), familial atypical multiple mole melanoma-pancreatic carcinoma syndrome (FAMMMPC) and melanoma-astrocytoma syndrome (MASTS).
