Transcription factor SOX-10 is a 58 kDa protein that can be located in the nucleus, extrinsic component of mitochondrial outer membrane and nuclear chromatin of cells. In Homo sapiens, transcription factor SOX-10 has been found to be involved in organismal processes, in particular, cell maturation, digestive tract morphogenesis and transcription elongation from RNA polymerase II promoter. Transcription factor SOX-10 is the subject of intensive application because of the fact that it plays a role in the negative regulation of canonical Wnt signaling pathway. Transcription factor SOX-10 is a repressor of apoptotic process, transcription by RNA polymerase II and Schwann cell proliferation but also is an enhancer of myelination, neuroblast proliferation and gliogenesis. It has been associated with essential functions such as DNA-binding transcription activator activity, and in addition, reacts with identical protein, HMG box and DNA. Transcription factor SOX-10 is clinically significant because abnormalities in its function have been associated with diseases like Waardenburg syndrome 2E (WS2E), Waardenburg syndrome 4C (WS4C) and peripheral demyelinating neuropathy. Peripheral demyelinating neuropathy, an autosomal dominant inheritancedisorder characterized by nystagmus, Pes cavus and intellectual disability, has especially been of interest to investigators.
