α-crystallin (Acr) is a 19 kDa protein that can be located in the extracellular region, cell wall and cytosol of cells. It is also known as Nox16 and HSP 16.3. Sequencing of HSP 16.3 has shown it contains a primary structural unit, the sHSP domain. α-crystallin (Acr) aids in organismal processes, for example, cellular response to hypoxia and cellular response to starvation. It negatively regulates growth.
