6 kDa early secretory antigenic target (alternatively called ESAT-6) is a 9904 da transmembrane protein that can be found in the cytoplasm, cell wall and integral component of membrane of cells. In m, 6 kDa early secretory antigenic target takes part in organismal processes, for instance, protein secretion by the type VII secretion system, suppression by symbiont of host T-cell mediated immune response and suppression by symbiont of host cell-mediated immune response. It binds to host cell surface. It is the subject of extensive research due to the fact that it is a component of the modulation by symbiont of host signal transduction pathway. It has been closely linked to critical functions like protein homodimerization activity.
