Does facilitated diffusion require ATP ?

Posted January 28, 2021

Answer

Facilitated diffusion does not require high energy molecules such as ATP. This type of diffusion uses channel proteins and carrier proteins to transport molecules across the plasma membrane.

Facilitated diffusion involves the movement of molecules from areas of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration. However in this process, the movement of molecules along the concentration gradient does not occur naturally. It uses transmembrane proteins such as carrier proteins and channel proteins to facilitate the movement of molecules across the membrane.

Temperature, concentration, molecule size, and diffusion distance are some of the factors that affect the process of facilitated diffusion.
