Can all cells undergo entosis?

Posted June 22, 2023

Answer

No, not all cells are capable of undergoing entosis. Entosis is characteristic for epithelial cells and epithelial cancers (e.g. breast carcinoma cells). The process has also been observed in human embryonic kidney cells. Cancer cells and cells with specific genetic alterations are more prone to undergo entosis than other types of cells. These cells have traits such as specific cell adhesion properties, signaling pathways, and cytoskeletal arrangements that make them predisposed to undergoing entosis.  There is still ongoing research to better comprehend entosis and its occurrence in different cell types.
