How is indocyanine green eliminated from the body?

Posted July 25, 2023

Answer

Indocyanine green (ICG) is cleared from the body by the liver and is excreted into bile in an unconjugated form. The half life of ICG is 120-240 seconds and it does not undergo metabolism. ICG excretion rate in bile is dependent on the hepatic excretory function and hepatic energy status, and any underlying medical conditions of the individual. ICG is eventually released in the intestine together with bile salts to be excreted in the stool.
