How many chromosomes do humans have?

Posted January 16, 2023

Answer

Humans have 46 chromosomes. These chromosomes are present as 23 pairs in every cell in the human body. Half the number of chromosomes are inherited from the mother, and the other half are inherited from the father. Of the 23 pairs, 22 pairs are autosomes. They are responsible for the somatic characters of an organism and are the same in females and males. The last pair of chromosomes (the X and Y chromosome) are the sex chromosomes. They determine the sex of the offspring and are different in females and males. Females have two copies of X chromosomes, while males have one X and one Y chromosome.
