Answer

Although the term mutation generally has a negative connotation, chromosomal mutations offer two critical advantages – survival and diversity. Some chromosomal mutations strengthen the organism’s defenses and resistance against certain pathogens, thereby increasing the organism’s survival rate. For example, chromosomal mutations that resulted in resistance to malaria and immunity to HIV. Chromosomal mutations are responsible for the diversity in appearance among humans. Eye color, hair color, freckles, slender bones, and other features are the result of chromosomal mutations and it is these different characteristics that makes each one of us unique as living organisms.
