Is the epigenome inherited?

Posted April 19, 2024

Answer

Yes, the genome is inherited from parents to offspring and from one generation of cells to the next following cell division. While most of the epigenome is reset during this process, certain chemical modifications on the DNA and histones may sometimes be retained and passed on to the next generation. This inheritance of epigenetic marks helps cells maintain their specialized functions over successive generations. Recent research suggests that epigenetic information can be inherited across multiple generations in various organisms besides humans, including yeast and plants. The environmental influences and experiences of parents can leave lasting imprints (known as epigenetic tags) which are then inherited by subsequent generations.
