What are the functions of cytokines?

Posted November 16, 2023

Answer

Cytokines have several important functions in the body. One function is their role in cell differentiation. Cytokines are able to signal immature cells to grow into a specific cell type. For example they can signal to an immature cell to develop into a white blood cell. Another function of cytokines is their role in cell proliferation. Cytokines are able to signal to the cell to proliferate and produce similar cells. For example, cytokines can signal one white blood cell to form more blood cells for the immune system. Another function of cytokines is their role in cell activation. Cytokines are able to direct cells and give them instructions on what to do. For example, they can signal immune cells to flood a site of infection to neutralize harmful bacterial cells. They can also increase or reduce inflammation at these sites. Cytokines also play a role in cancer. They promote anti-cancer processes by sending signals which make atypical cells die and for normal cells to live longer.
