What are the growth conditions for animal cell culture?

Posted March 13, 2023

Answer

Animal cell culture is a process in which cells are extracted from an animal and allowed to grow outside of their natural environment, under controlled conditions. Growth conditions for animal cell culture may vary depending on the source of the cells. In general, the culture media used for animal cell culture is more specific and more complex as compared to the simple culture media used for microbial growth. Vital components in animal cell culture media include growth factors, vitamins, inorganic salts, hormones, fat and fat-soluble vitamins, energy source, and nitrogen source. Antibiotics and pH buffering systems may also be added if required. The temperature for the growth varies depending on whether the cells have been harvested from warm-blooded or cold-blooded animals as cell growth and division occurs at different temperatures in these animal classes. The optimal temperature for culturing warm-blooded animal cells is 37°C and for cold-blooded it is between 15°C and 25°C.
