What are the similarities between cell viability and cell proliferation?

Posted November 30, 2023

Answer

One similarity is that both are significant factors for the assessment of overall cell health. Cell viability assays measure things such as membrane permeability, and levels of ATP within cells, while cell proliferation assays measure the number of viable cells through their genetic material. Another similarity is that both play roles in the development of therapeutics. Cell viability and proliferation assays are widely used to evaluate the effect of potential cancer treatments, including cytostatic and cytotoxic substances. Both of these assays are utilized to measure the quantity of healthy cells in a sample and/or the speed at which the number of cells is increasing, making them highly useful techniques. Another similarity is that they are both characteristics of cells. Cell viability refers to the percentage of healthy, viable cells in a given sample. Cell proliferation refers to the increase in cell number following cell division.
