RNA splicing and alternative splicing are two types of modifications that follow the transcription of eukaryotic genes. Both are important for the production of a functional protein. They share the following similarities:
- Both splice exons by removing introns
- They are both post-transcriptional modifications that occur during eukaryotic gene expression
- Both occur inside the nucleus
- Both produce a mRNA molecule
- The effector molecule for both is the primary RNA strand
