  • Helps in treating some rare genetic metabolic disorders
  • Used as a buffering agent in some antacids, analgesics, toiletries, antiperspirants, and cosmetics. 
  • Is an ingredient in some drugs used to improve gastric absorption
  • Used as a sweetener or taste enhancer in some food products
  • Is an ingredient in some protein drinks and food supplements
  • Used as a food additive in pet food and in animal feedstock
  • Acts as an intermediate in the manufacture of a number of chemical products
  • Is used in the process of manufacturing herbicide glyphosate
