What is an oxidase test?

The oxidase test is a laboratory test that researchers use to identify bacteria that synthesize cytochrome c oxidase enzymes. This enzyme is associated with the final step in the bacterial electron transport chain. During the step, the enzyme cytochrome oxidase catalyzes the oxidation of cytochrome c while reducing oxygen to form water.
