What is the structure of ATP?

Posted November 9, 2022

Answer

ATP stands for Adenosine Triphosphate. It is composed of 3 main components:

  1. The pentose sugar molecule, ribose, which lies at the center of the ATP molecule
  2. The nitrogenous base adenine, which is attached to the first carbon of the pentose sugar molecule
  3. Three phosphate groups, which are attached in a chain formation to the 5th carbon of the pentose sugar

The three components are linked together into a single molecule through condensation reactions.
