Answer

A substance is classified as an acid if:

  • Its pH value is less than 7
  • The number of hydrogen ions on the substance is lower after a reaction (acids donate hydrogen ions)

A substance is classified as a base if:

  • Its pH value is more than 7
  • The number of hydrogen ions is higher after a reaction ( bases accept hydrogen ions)
