Where are Merkel cells located?

Merkel cells are located in the touch-sensitive area of the epidermis and around the bulge region of hair follicles. They exist in human skin at varying levels according to body site, and are at highest density on the fingertips and lips/face where touch sensation is most prominent. The function of these cells is to mediate mechanotransduction in the skin.
