Mitochondria are the main cellular organelles that are involved in initiation of intrinsic pathway of apoptosis. MOMP (Mitochondria Outer Membrane Permeabilization) initiates the intrinsic apoptosis pathway, triggering the release of pro-apoptotic proteins from the mitochondrial intermembrane space into the cytoplasm.
