What is biotin labeling?

Posted May 7, 2021

Answer

Biotin labeling is the process of attaching biotin to a protein molecule and other macromolecules. It is also known as biotin tagging or biotinylation.

Biotin labeling produces a strong bond that reduces background binding and facilitates the detection and purification of protein even under extreme temperature and pH conditions and in presence of denaturing agents and organic solvents. Biotin labeling is very useful in protein research and is used in a wide range of applications including ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), Western blot analysis, flow cytometry, and cell surface labeling. It can also be used for immunoprecipitation and immunohistochemistry.
