Which fluorescent calcium indicators are compatible with GFP positive cells?

Posted May 20, 2019

For example, common green fluorescent Ca2+ indicators, such as Fluo-4, Fluo-8®, Cal-520® and Calbryte-520, share very similar excitation and emission wavelengths compared to GFP. When measuring Ca2+ flux in cells expressing GFP, which fluorescent calcium indicators should I consider?

Answer

Consider using cell permeant fluorescent indicators with emission wavelengths greater than 570 nm. Orange calcium indicators such as Cal-590 AM (Cat# 20510) and Calbryte 590 AM (Cat# 20700) have excitation and emission wavelengths equal to 570 nm and 590 nm, respectively. Red calcium indicators such as Cal-630 AM (Cat# 20510) and Calbryte 630 AM (Cat# 20700) have excitation and emission wavelengths equal to 608 nm and 626 nm, respectively.
