Are any bases methylated by default?

Posted January 3, 2024

Answer

Cytosine bases of eukaryotic DNA are most commonly associated with DNA methylation. Cytosine bases are converted to 5-methylcytosine by DNA methyltransferase (DNMT) enzymes. Cytosine methylation is common in both eukaryotes and prokaryotes. However, the rate of DNA methylation varies considerably from one species to another.
