How are ionic bonds formed?

Posted February 14, 2024

Answer

In ionic bonding, atoms transfer electrons to achieve a complete outer electron shell. Ionic bonds are formed through the electrostatic attraction between positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions). An anion is formed when a nonmetal gains a valence electron and a cation is produced when a metal loses a valence electron. This exchange of electrons achieves a more stable configuration for both types of ions.
