There are more than 220 types of somatic cells. Each type is differentiated and has specific characteristics and functions. Examples of specialized somatic cells include but are not limited to: 

• Nerve cells– control and coordinate bodily functions
• Muscle cells– specialized to perform different functions depending on location in the body
• Blood cells – different types with each performing different functions such as carrying oxygen to different tissues, blood clot formation, and protecting against pathogens and infections. 
• Skin cells– unique regenerative quality
