How many types of somatic cells are there?

Answer

There are more than 220 types of somatic cells. Each type is differentiated and has specific characteristics and functions. Examples of specialized somatic cells include but are not limited to: 

  • Nerve cells – control and coordinate bodily functions
  • Muscle cells – specialized to perform different functions depending on location in the body
  • Blood cells – different types with each performing different functions such as carrying oxygen to different tissues, blood clot formation, and protecting against pathogens and infections. 
  • Skin cells – unique regenerative quality
