What are the advantages of continuous culture?

Posted March 21, 2024

Answer

One advantage is that continuous culture allows for the maintenance of steady-state conditions, where nutrients are continuously supplied at a fixed rate and waste products are continuously removed. A second advantage is that continuous culture can lead to higher productivity compared to batch culture. Additionally, the levels of essential nutrients can be altered to optimize growth rates and ensure consistent environmental conditions are maintained over time. Continuous culture systems also support high cell densities, as the microbial population is allowed to grow and accumulate biomass over time without reaching stationary phase.
