What are the cons of DNA microarray?

Posted August 16, 2023

Answer

One disadvantage is that the results require a significant amount of time to analyze since the data collected from each array are very large. The array has an average turnaround time of 8-15 days, and the results are not always quantitative. Additionally, these arrays give an indirect measure of relative concentration. Another limitation of DNA microarray is that they require prior sequencing information before being carried out, unlike RNA sequencing which does not. Also, a DNA array can only detect sequences that the array was designed to detect. Thus, it is hard to produce arrays in which multiple related DNA/RNA sequences do not bind to the same probe on the array. There is also a high cost associated with just a single experiment, as a single experiment can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars. DNA microarrays also lack sensitivity for genes expressed at low or very low levels and have a small dynamic range.
