Glycine has several crucial functions especially related to the central nervous system where it acts as a neurotransmitter. It also functions as an anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and cryoprotective agent in nervous and peripheral tissues. In addition, glycine is a precursor for several major metabolites including porphyrins, creatine, purines, glutathione, and haem.
