Answer
There are various limitations of monoclonal antibodies.
- It is a time consuming process, which takes approximately 18 months to create a finished and distributed monoclonal antibody ready for patient use.
- It is also a very expensive ($3000-5000 per dose) and laborious procedure, as the process takes a considerable amount of time.
- Small peptide and fragment antigens may not be suitable antigens as the mAbs may not recognize them.
- More than 99% of the cells do not survive the fusion process, therefore reducing the range of useful antibodies that can be generated against an antigen.
- The hybridoma culture may be difficult to maintain and be subject to contamination.
