What are the limitations of monoclonal antibodies?

Posted October 10, 2023

Answer

There are various limitations of monoclonal antibodies.

  1. It is a time consuming process, which takes approximately 18 months to create a finished and distributed monoclonal antibody ready for patient use.
  2. It is also a very expensive ($3000-5000 per dose) and laborious procedure, as the process takes a considerable amount of time.
  3. Small peptide and fragment antigens may not be suitable antigens as the mAbs may not recognize them.
  4. More than 99% of the cells do not survive the fusion process, therefore reducing the range of useful antibodies that can be generated against an antigen.
  5. The hybridoma culture may be difficult to maintain and be subject to contamination.
