What happens to the engulfed cell during entosis?

Posted June 22, 2023

Answer

Cells engulfed by entosis typically die since that is what they are programmed to do. However, some can divide inside of their host cell vacuoles or may break free completely uninjured. In fact, these cells that escape are also capable of successive rounds of cell division. A small percentage of cells undergo cell division while still internalized, exhibiting that the engulfed cell is still viable.
