Answer
If the plasma membrane ruptures or breaks down, the homeostasis of a cell would be disrupted. A rupture in the plasma membrane would allow intracellular components to exit the cell and allow toxic levels of Ca2+, oxidants, and other foreign substances to enter the cell. The plasma membrane acts as a barrier and without it the cell would not be able to properly exchange materials across the barrier when necessary. As a result, the cell will then die.
