When does mismatch repair happen?

Mismatch repair occurs following DNA replication and aims to identify and replace incorrectly paired bases that were not corrected during proofreading. Additionally, it can detect and repair small insertions and deletions that occur when polymerases temporarily lose their grip on the template strand.
