Why are lipids important?

Answer

Lipids are a diverse group of organic molecules that serve a variety of crucial functions in living organisms.

  1. Lipids function as energy reservoirs, storing large amounts of energy in a reduced space within adipose tissue cells. This energy is provided as a steady source of fuel when the body needs it most such as during periods of intense activity.
  2. They form the structural component of the cell membrane, providing a vital hydrophobic barrier that protects cellular content from the outside environment.
  3. Lipids protect internal organs by providing critical insulation and cushioning. They also contribute to regulating the body’s internal climate and help to maintain a constant temperature
  4. Some lipids act as messenger molecules, transmitting signals from one body part to the other.
  5. In plants, lipids protect leaves from drying up.
