Does the plasma membrane contain cholesterol?

Posted September 13, 2021

Answer

The plasma membrane contains cholesterol that has various functions in cells. Therefore, cholesterol ensures that cells retain their fluidity in freezing conditions. Further, the interaction of fatty acid chains is altered by cholesterol. Additionally, the cholesterol in the cells significantly reduces cell membrane permeability. Cholesterol facilitates the limitation of molecules entering the cell because of the controlled phospholipids deposition. It is important to note that the cholesterol content influences the stability of the membrane in the cells. Cholesterol is believed to prevent the solidification of the plasma membrane components. The outer surface of the plasma membrane comprises glycolipids. Besides, the plasma membrane is a vital cellular component that ensures the proper functioning of the cells.
