Chromosomal alterations refer to changes in the number or structure of chromosomes. They are also known as chromosomal abnormalities. 

Chromosomes are strands of condensed genetic material that contain all the information that make up an organism. Any change in a chromosome, whether it is a change in number or structure, results in a chromosomal aberration, which may cause a variety of medical disorders.
