What are the advantages of second generation NGS?

Posted March 11, 2024

Answer

Second generation NGS offers several advantages. Second-generation NGS platforms can sequence millions of DNA fragments simultaneously, allowing for rapid and efficient sequencing of large genomes or multiple samples in a single run. This permits researchers to sequence a human genome in just a few weeks. It is also cost effective compared to first-generation methods and is more affordable per base pair. Second generation NGS technologies are also capable of sequenced fragmented DNA due to their ability to handle short reads efficiently. This is particularly useful when working with samples from fixed paraffin-embedded tissues. This technology also offers enhanced base calling accuracy and reduced error rates compared to first-generation methods.
