Why is glycine so important? (biology)

Answer

Although glycine is deemed to be the simplest of amino acids, it plays an important role in several biological processes. Glycine is a key component of crucial biological molecules and several metabolic reactions. It contributes to cellular growth and health and is integral to the synthesis of the antioxidant glutathione that is involved in fighting free radicals. Glycine also plays a central role as an immune-modulating, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective agent and is a major neurotransmitter inhibitor in the brainstem and spinal cord.
