Cyanines are used in a wide variety of biological applications including comparative genomic hybridization and in gene chips. Depending on the structure, they cover the spectrum visible and IR wavelengths. Cy 3, Cy5, Cy5.5 and Cy7 are the most popular cyanine dyes. Cy5.5NS dyes have the spectral properties identical to Cy5.5, but do not have the four sulfonate groups of Cy5.5. Cy5.5NS dyes are not soluble in water while Cy5.5 dyes have high water solubility.
