What is the AIM2 inflammasome?

Posted October 11, 2021

Answer

AIM2 inflammasome is a large multi-protein caspase-2 activating complex formed by AIM2 protein and the adaptor ASC.

AIM2, a protein encoded by the AIM2 gene in humans, is an integral component of the immune system. It plays a key role in antibacterial and antiviral defenses. AIM2 recognizes the presence of microbial double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) in the cytoplasm. Activated AIM2 recruits the adaptor ASC (apoptosis-associated speck-like protein containing a CARD). This results in caspase-1 binding and the formation of the AIM2 inflammasome. This signaling contributes to the defense against viral and bacterial DNA.
