How do cytokines affect the immune system?

Posted October 23, 2023

Answer

Cytokines are an intrinsic part of the immune system. They are released into the bloodstream by cells of the immune system in response to an invasion by any pathogen. Cytokines are responsible for a diverse range of functions that work cohesively to support and strengthen the immune system. Some of their functions include:

  • Regulating the body’s response to infection
  • Stimulate the production of blood cells
  • Aid the development, maintenance, and repair of tissues
  • Driver inflammation through interleukins, interferons, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha
