What are the common shapes of the nucleus?

Posted July 12, 2023

Answer

The shape of the nucleus is based on the arrangement of chromosomes and nuclear lamina. The nuclei of most cells are either spherical or oval shaped. Common cell types with oval-shaped nuclei include columnar epithelial cells. There may also be many unusual shapes of the nucleus for different types of cells. For example, the shape of the nucleus of white blood cells is irregular and dependent on the WBC type. Monocytes have a kidney shaped nucleus, eosinophils have a bi-lobed nucleus, and neutrophils are multinucleated.
