What is transformation in molecular biology?

Posted June 22, 2020

Answer

Transformation is the process by which exogenous genetic material is transferred into bacterial cells. It may also be used to describe the insertion of foreign genes into nonbacterial cells, including yeast, fungi and plant; However, the uptake of DNA into mammalian cells is called transfection. DNA damaging conditions are usually employed to endow the bacteria with the ability to take up exogenous DNA from the environment.
